Purpose:
Medicaid ensures quality health care for people with mental health issues and concerns. For this reason, Medicaid established the new Medicaid Mental Health Provider Credentialing Program. Providers, participants and officials said that credentialing was important for the following reasons:
- Results in better services, improved accountability
- Achieves meaningful results
- Achieves improved partnerships with participants and providers
- Ensures public protection
- Assures competence and sets meaningful qualifications
- Establishes uniform expectation, standards, and a consistent process
Authority:
The 2005 Idaho Legislature passed House Bill 385 granting Idaho Medicaid the authority to establish a program that credentials mental health agencies to assure mental health clinics and psychosocial rehabilitation providers meet quality standards, utilize qualified providers, and provide appropriate services that meet the needs of Medicaid participants.

Business Psychology Associates (BPA), partnering with Idaho’s Division of Medicaid, will implement the Medicaid Mental Health Provider Credentialing Program in Idaho. Business Psychology Associates will work with existing and new mental health providers to gather and analyze information using an application, self-study and on-site review, to complete the credentialing process. It looks at mental health provider services extended to Idaho Medicaid participants to ensure that they meet certain administrative and treatment standards of care.
